JK Rowling’s new book, The Casual Vacancy, is released today. She says it’s aimed at adults, and the content is certainly not suitable for the younger readers of Harry Potter. Swearing and sex abound, it’s not what her readers are used to as it is her first book after the stories of the boy wizard that made her worth more than $900 million and launched her to superstardom.
It is, however, a book for the Harry Potter generation. It has been 5 years since the release of the last book in the series, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. For those kids who were brought up on Harry Potter, spending their mornings at school discussing the latest books and queuing early for their release, they are now at an appropriate age to read the Casual Vacancy. Whether this was an intentional move by Rowling or just convenient timing is impossible to say – what is known is it’s undoubtedly going to be a bestseller, regardless of quality.
Following the immense success of Harry Potter, does she have anything more to prove? Possibly not. But for those not looking at her new work through rose-tinted glasses, it will be interesting to see how she stands as an author straying into foreign territory.
