Screen Watch Film of the Year – The Way Way Back

You voted, and the results are in – congratulations to The Way Way Back for becoming the Screen Watch film of the year!

The magnificent script by The Descendants writers Faxon and Rash portrays the “awkward stage” of adolescence in all its confusing glory, without being too whiny and angsty.

Sam Rockwell is the king of cool as the manager of the local water park, and Steve Carrell’s performance as the intensely unlikeable but ultimately human ‘boyfriend of the mother’ is a hugely refreshing change from his usual roles. The young lead Liam James carries it well, with all the uncertainty of The Perks of Being a Wallflower-like charm.

Poignant, funny, and heartbreaking in all the right moments, The Way Way Back is a nostalgic insight into a teenage summer that sweeps the audience along right up to its affirming final moments.
